ABSTRACT

SERVICE DELIVERY OPTIONS We define service delivery options in this textbook as individual options for providing services to gifted students. Generally, service delivery options refer to and describe organizational structures such as the settings and/or student groupings utilized to provide advanced instruction to identified students. Pull-out programs, acceleration, and cluster grouping are three examples of service delivery options. These service delivery options provide general guidance for where, and to some extent how often and with whom, gifted students will be educated, but usually do not describe the specific types of educational experiences or curriculum that students will encounter within these structures (Advanced Placement courses, considered to be accelerated courses, are notable exceptions). Individual service delivery options rarely articulate a complete programming diet adequate for meeting the academic and affective needs of a broad range of gifted students, but rather need to be combined in thoughtful ways into a spectrum of services.
