ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended to provide some closure to the extensive treatment of standard setting contained in this volume. Authors of previous chapters of this book adroitly discussed a variety of foundational and methodological issues. The content of this chapter consists of a brief reflection on the accrued and anticipated benefits of standard setting. It is concluded that there is good reason for those involved in the science and practice of standard setting to confidently assert its benefits, and to look forward to progress in the field-progress that is likely to result in additional, anticipatable public good. First, however, a brief introduction of a more general nature is presented.
