The cultural construction of self and emotion: Implications for well-being

Let a man lift himself by his own self alone; let him not degrade himself because the self alone is the friend of oneself and the self is the enemy of oneself. For one who has conquered his very self by his own self, his very self becomes his friend, but for one who has not conquered his self, his very self will act inimically, as would an actual enemy.
