ABSTRACT
This chapter will look at Hume’s conceptualization of progress and will focus on the significance of his ‘Of the Populousness of Ancient Nations’ for the development of stadial thinking. It explores the sense or senses in which Hume himself held a four-stage model of social development and its associated implications.
