ABSTRACT

In short, you should understand why you observe, what you are observing and how you can observe. Check the requirements for your course to see which relate to this chapter.

Observation skills are needed to support class management, to ensure pupil safety at all times and to monitor whole class and individual pupil’s work, thus being able to provide feedback to promote their learning. In addition, observation enables you to gather information as to the effectiveness of your teaching and to learn from watching experienced teachers at work. Developing your observation skills also helps you to support pupils in their development of observation and to provide information that needs to be recorded for the completion of pupil records and reports.
