ABSTRACT

Beyond the fundamental importance of design in facilitating the circulation and accumulation of capital, design can also play key roles, as indicated at the beginning of this book, in contributing to the quality of life and the liveability and sustainability of cities. Design can make urban environments more legible and help to create a sense of place. It can help people with physical disabilities through codified ‘universal’ design standards. It can promote and ensure public health and bring order and stability to otherwise complex, chaotic and volatile settings. It can make transportation and land use more efficient. It can prevent crime, protect built heritage, engender community and encourage conviviality.
