ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, we draw conclusions about children’s divorce experiences from their own narrative accounts written when they were college students. What have these articulate students’ stories taught us about how divorce affected their lives? Certainly, these narratives do not provide any direct information regarding the students’ level of adjustment, such as what would be provided had we administered tests of their levels of depression, their self-esteem, or their academic performance in college. However, providing such “objective” information was not our intent in this project. Rather, consistent with our purpose to give voice to young adults who have experienced parental divorce, these stories provide a window into understanding young adults’ perceptions of a variety of divorce-related phenomena, including divorce itself, how the divorce process unfolded for them, how divorce affected them in the short run, and how their subsequent lives were influenced by their parents’ divorce.
