ABSTRACT

In this chapter we analyze some major trends in the marketization of Portuguese higher education. First, we will present the main factors that seem to have strengthened competition. In the following two sections we discuss to what extent this trend has represented a move towards greater marketization (Wolf Jr, 1993; Le Grand and Bartlett, 1993), namely by referring to the implications in Portugal of some current important European trends in higher education policy, such as the Bologna process and the move towards accreditation. We will finish with some concluding remarks on the implications and coherence of these complex trends.
