ABSTRACT

I do not attempt to cover the entire religious environmental movement here. In fact, its very nature makes the movement difficult to pin down. what makes an environmentalist religious? For that matter, what makes anyone an environmentalist? I simply attempt to summarize and contextualize the literature about religious Americans who have paid (or are beginning to pay) more attention to environmental issues. The movement is diverse, loosely organized, and often locally based. However, some important national evangelical groups, like the National Association of Evangelicals, are beginning to debate how central environmental issues should be to their ministry. After describing religious environmentalists, their organizations and rhetoric, and the lessons they can teach those studying religion and politics generally, I will address the potential impact of religious environmentalism on the broader movement of the religious right in the United States.
