ABSTRACT
Academic researchers study the methods and procedures of professional communicators
and develop theories of what is and what is not effective. Professionals rarely study
theory but many have “tried and true” methods of practice that are, in effect, theory.
Often, these practices of professionals are the same theories that academicians have
studied and named.
