ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the core material questions and question words which students would expect to encounter in their first year of learning Japanese. Grammar points are followed by contextualized examples and exercises which allow students to reinforce and consolidate their learning. While word order plays a crucial role in the formation of questions in English, in Japanese, word order is irrelevant in this respect. A Japanese yes-no question is formed by attaching the question particle ka to the end of a corresponding statement. The answer takes the form of hai/ee yes or iie no, followed by the affirmative or negative form of the predicate respectively. In casual speech, ka is usually dropped, and only a rising intonation distinguishes a question from its statement counterpart. Particles used in questions are usually the same as those used in the corresponding answers.
