ABSTRACT

One of the paradoxes which American society faces is that of individual rights versus community standards. This dichotomy emanates from individuals’ desires to be unique, independent, and hold a strong self-identity. Yet, at the same time, people seek interdependence by developing strong human and symbolic relationships (Purpel, 1989, 2004). This need for a group identity compels communities to develop their own identities, ultimately creating community standards. However, moral dilemmas may arise when community standards conflict with individual rights.
