ABSTRACT

The Universe which Reason delineates is one which consists of a single substance in infinite attributes. With the attributes we are already slightly acquainted (III, 7), but substance is as yet unknown. In this chapter, substance will loom large: the first section inspects Spinoza’s definition of it; the second investigates three notions of it; the fifth and seventh sections expound Spinoza’s demonstrations of its properties.
