chapter  14

Funding in sport is often taken for granted by managers, academics and students. However, securing and managing funds is often one of the main challenges for any organisation. Indeed, in the public and voluntary sectors it is the management of external funds that enables the organisation to survive. While the funding of major sport organisations such as professional sport teams is beyond the scope of this chapter we do need to recognise that many of you will, at some point in your careers, be asked to bring in money to your organisation. Some of you will work in organisations that sell goods, so the reinvestment of profits can be used to fund new ideas; however, many of you may work on sport development projects, community projects or in small and medium-sized enterprises, which means that you will need to write funding bids and business plans.
