Biographies of monarchs and their spouses have been separated out for con-venience and have been listed under their first names. There are a few excep-tions, for example, Earl of Bothwell and Lord Guildford Dudley appear in Section 12.2: Biographical index. The biogra-phies of monarchs are not comprehensive and the reader should consult Chapter 1: General chronology for details of their reigns.
