ABSTRACT

These are highly selective bibliographies. The aim has been to provide pointers to a large number of subjects within Tudor history and, where possible, to include the best recent authorities. Categorisation has been difficult because so many books and articles cover several different subjects – for instance, some books and articles in the Politics and Central Administration area might fit equally well into the finance or the law sections and a biography of a bishop, for example, obviously contains material relevant to religion and ecclesiastical affairs. Books published before 1950 are generally useful mainly from a historiographical point of view. Many books and articles published between 1950 and 2000 remain the standard authorities on particular subjects. Others remain useful for establishing facts, chronology and interpretative positions, etc. even when superseded by more recent interpretations. Place of publication is London unless otherwise stated. Places of publication have not been traced for books published prior to 1951. Dates are given for main editions but not for reprints.
