In the 1920s, Freud proposed a new “structural model,” organized around the three-part mental structure of id, ego, and superego, and the resulting psychic conflicts. The emerging “Ego Psychology” included a more adaptive side to mental functioning, leading to increased attention to growth-promoting potentials in child development.
