ABSTRACT

As the numbers at the beginning of this section suggest, at Holt over the last decade, more students in lower-track math classes have been experiencing success, and then going on for further study. Nick’s experience is the experience of a particular student; he cannot represent a range of students. Unlike Nick, many of the students in Algebra 1 do not have diagnosed learning disabilities. And, while some are strongly affiliated with school activities, like Nick with wrestling, other students in Algebra 1 are less involved in school activities and seem to care less about their grades. But, as Marty and Dave’s discussion reminds us, a wide range of students have gone on from Algebra 1 to the study of further mathematics at the high school.
