ABSTRACT

The first essay in this section described Nick’s experience of success in Algebra 1. This experience allowed him to proceed up the curricular layer cake. The second essay described tensions in more advanced coursework that can be exacerbated as students who have in the past been unsuccessful continue up the layer-cake curriculum. The description of Russ and Jill’s experiences in this last essay alerts us to potential tensions that can be, in part, a by-product of having greater heterogeneity in advanced coursework.
