THE COMEDY OF ROMANCE
The romantic comedy genre is differentiated from the romance and the melodrama by its emphasis on the generation of laughter, placing it firmly within the wider, rather amorphous comedy genre. Comedy is amorphous in covering such a diverse range of forms, ranging from the romantic comedy, through parody and satire, to slapstick. The romantic
comedy has established its own narratives and comic language, which clearly define its genre identity. Nevertheless, there are pertinent issues concerning the nature and purpose of the comedy, the positioning of the spectator, and the ideologies that are explored through humour.
