Prior knowledge

The ideas, information, beliefs and attitudes that learners bring with them to the classroom are some of the elements that comprise what could be termed as their prior knowledge, or knowledge gained prior to formal teaching. We are all familiar with the notion of prior knowledge and how it can influence our learning because, in one way or another, whether we are introduced to new things or are in a situation in which we are building on existing ideas, what we already know impacts on that learning.
