ABSTRACT

In this chapter we ‘free up’ our names by unloading their socalled existential import (a term explained below). We do this by slightly expanding our account of cases (or models)—in particular, adding a special subset of our domains-and, in turn, restricting our quantifiers to the new special subset. Such adjustments are required to accommodate a sort of ‘freedom of speech’ (though not in any legal sense of the term).1
