On the basis of the ideas established in Chapter 2, let me now examine The Tale of Genji, one of the highest achievements in the history of Japanese literature. Completed in the early eleventh century, this work focuses on relations between the strong, beautiful and sophisticated and the weak, ugly and indecent.
