ABSTRACT

We began this book with an overview of the many arguments that have been presented in the popular press and in the engineering education literature which have re-iterated the message of the need for more trained engineers. While some elements of this shortage are connected with particular locations and functions, or have become acute at particular times, the breadth of the call for more engineers presents the situation as a global crisis. Without more trained engineers many of the innovations needed to cope with current global issues, such as global warming, environmental change, automobile modifi cations, more and faster global communications and more resource exploration, to name but a few of the most urgent, will be unavailable to future generations. The world needs more engineers and it needs them now.
