ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explain how the human infant, from conception, actively seeks to make sense of the world, initially through using what is available – other people, language, their own senses and movement. The importance of others in this sense-making journey and early interactions between children and caregivers are explored and this leads into how children come to understand the intentions and the needs and the feelings of others. The human infant is seen as competent, communicative, questioning and playful as she explores everything she encounters in her world.
