ABSTRACT

The glamour of the courtesan house was mainly an interior experience, which was to a great extent insulated from the city-a “foreign place” unlike any other cities and towns. As the sojourner’s provisional home, the courtesan house certainly sought to re-create the interiority of traditional courtyard house or garden, but under the new urban and architectural conditions the establishment merely retreated to modern interiors featuring the displays of new material culture. Such interior spaces in fact became integrated into the surrounding neighborhood, as they were in a more compact architectural layout and less enclosed by walls.
