ABSTRACT
Effort and Recovery (ER) is Laban’s last book. Letters in the archives give the lie to the rumour that because it was left in too incomplete a state the book could not be published. The first is from John MacDonald to Laban on 29 January, 1953:
Can you give me any news of ‘Effort and Recovery’? I had the impression quite a time ago that the typescript was nearing completion. I shall be glad to see it as soon as possible. 1
