Maeterlinck’s’ The Miracle of Saint Anthony circa 1921
The Vakhtangov Studio’s production of Maeterlinck’s The Miracle of Saint Anthony opened in 1918, after a two-year rehearsal period. Conceived before the Revolution, The Miracle was premiered one year after the Bolsheviks took power. The essence of this production did not change much throughout the rehearsal period. In 1921, however, Vakhtangov seriously revised his production. This revision was prompted by Vakhtangov’s new understanding of the revolutionary times and of the theatrical form those times required.
