ABSTRACT

The increasing volume of children involved in violence in oursociety is alarming. The manner in which the violence meets the child varies, but it is consistently detrimental to the child’s welfare. The sources of violence that are individually based, such as from another child or from an adult, have a vast effect on a child’s development. The unpredictable nature and uncertain extent of violence presents a unique challenge to the prevention. This chapter will examine the issues of scope of violence, schoolbased prevention programs, and the evaluation of such programs. Venerable constellations of programs to prevent violence have been designed. The means to measure their effects and thereby to improve them is less common.
