ABSTRACT

Lu is an 11-year-old Korean-American 5th grader at an afflu-ent private school. Lu excels in all of his classes, but is particularly skilled in literature and writing. The private school setup allows each student to have a 1-hour “special course” block each day where they can choose to enroll in an athletic specialty class, band/music, art/design, or an advanced communication course. Lu is excited by the rigor of the advanced communication elective, although he is the only boy in the 5th grade not pursuing an athletic specialty elective.
