ABSTRACT

The maltreatment of children in any context is unacceptable.Yet recent statistics indicate that violence against children is all too frequent and is a worldwide problem. These findings necessitate that steps be taken to help protect children from violence. This book has presented several conceptual, clinical, and applied ways of providing safe environments for children. Taken in its entirety, the book provides various platforms and viewpoints that we believe can aid the reader in planning and sustaining this essential mission. In this final chapter we review key themes that have emerged throughout this book: the importance of clearly defined terms, the needs children have after they have suffered from an act of violence, and plausible mechanisms for action. Finally, we will indicate some recommendations for future planning and design in this area and some outstanding resources.
