ABSTRACT

To illustrate the basic premise of the job demands-resources model, we first ask you to focus on all the aspects in your work that cause feelings of stress and exhaustion. Next, we ask you to examine the aspects that help you to succeed in work tasks, even in stressful circumstances: things that make you feel energetic, provide a sense of pride and purpose, and enable you to enjoy what you are accomplishing – i.e., all that contributes to a sense of engagement. These aspects are likely to cover a wide variety of items, most of which can be termed either job demands (answers to the first question) or job resources

(answers to the second question). In addition, some of the stressful aspects of work may also consist of a lack of resources necessary to accomplish required tasks.
