ABSTRACT

Students and early career professionals from developed countries enter destination countries in the less developed world on a tourist visa to work as volunteers on volunteer placements with non-profit organisations that work on environmental or social projects. This was initially termed volunteer tourism, before the term was shortened to ‘voluntourism’ and defined as:

those tourists who, for various reasons, volunteer in an organized way to undertake holidays that may involve the aiding or alleviating the material poverty of some groups in society, the restoration of certain environments, or research into aspects of society or environment.
