ABSTRACT

It can be hard to listen to or even contemplate trauma survivors’ stories. Emotions engendered by the trauma are unendurable. Simply sharing space with that engulfing raw emotion can be terrifying. These feelings can seem too big to hold, and yet, as a part of our job, as social workers, we must help contain them. Trauma-related terror, anger, helplessness, sadness, shame, and disgust are often so intense that things feel out of control. Pandora’s Box apparently opens wide, releasing pure evil without a ray of hope.
