Vulnerable Populations

Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly and mentally ill, immigrants, previous trauma survivors, and those with substance abuse issues, are at risk of adverse effects from trauma. Experiencing trauma also creates vulnerabilities for survivors that increase their risk of complex reactions to trauma or further traumatization. Some develop substance abuse or mental health issues, while others manifest difficulties with relationships and work that can lead to marginalization. This chapter focuses on how trauma and vulnerability interact and highlights specific issues for social workers to consider.
