Other Trauma Interventions
We can employ many supplemental treatment methods when working with trauma. Survivors may even discover beneficial techniques on their own. In fact, Alice Miller, a renowned psychoanalyst and trauma expert, investigated the lives of famous artists like Picasso and surmised they used their art to heal trauma histories (Miller, 1991). Creative approaches that promote recovery include psychodrama, dance, writing, music, and art. Spirituality can also play a role, as can intentional physicality such as breathing, yoga, and relaxation. Finally, there are psychotherapeutic interventions that are efficacious for many survivors. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), guided imagery and hypnosis, dream work, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) fall into this category. This chapter discusses these interventions and how to choose the most effective ones for each individual.
