Social–spatial transformation

Much like their counterparts in other former socialist countries, Chinese cities showcased social egalitarianism and experienced few spatial inequalities before market reform. But that is more or less a bygone era. Under economic transition, market forces increasingly dictate the shaping and reshaping of urban landscape. There is evidence that spatial locations are now important within cities. Housing and land prices change by location, in a gradient similar to that in many Western cities.
