ABSTRACT
A pioneering study of coon songs and ragtime performed in black musical comedies, circus sideshows and tented minstrel shows. Examines African American performers in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows. The authors chronicle the trials and tribulations of the performers, segregation in the tent shows and how “Coon Shouters” like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith prepared the way for the evolution of blues and jazz.
