ABSTRACT

Some of the first writing and drawing children do is ‘recount’, for example retellings of recent experiences in and out of the classroom. Early books and resources in this genre support and enrich children’s understanding and writing and are useful in lessons across the curriculum. There are ‘life cycles’ for science, journeys and ‘day in the life of ’ accounts for geography, and autobiography and biography for history and English lessons. As children get older the recounts they read and write become longer and more complex and the evaluation and analysis of people, incidents and ideas begun earlier on are now more evident and more sophisticated.
