ABSTRACT

In this chapter the impact of the adoption of the internet in families with adolescents is described. The discussion rests on the concept of family boundaries, one which accords well with the diversi®cation approach we developed in the last chapter to capture the nature of changes in the family system and peer relations. Following the conceptual consideration we review research ®ndings on the implications of the internet at home for parent±adolescent relationships. In the ®nal part of the chapter we treat family adjustment, discussing the concept of family mediation and the different strategies that parents use to control family boundaries.
