ABSTRACT

My reaction to a great deal of the exhibitions which I was directed to visit was initially irritation and frustration (as is the case for many first-time readers of Lacan’s texts). More often than not I was angry that my time was being wasted. I could not bring myself to find anything to admire or integrate in the pictures. Naturally, in hindsight I understand that Parveen selected exhibitions carefully. But at the time I thought most of the art was a joke being played on the world, supported by critics who had to survive by ratcheting up the reputation of one or other artist. As most modern art lovers can tell, I was quite a philistine.
