ABSTRACT

A pivotal rite of passage for those pursuing academic careers is to successfully obtain a job! For those who are still graduate students, there will be a temptation to put this chapter aside based on the incorrect assumption that the job preparation process begins late in a student’s graduate career. Instead, we urge readers to devote careful attention to this chapter very early in their graduate studies since preparation for the job market actually begins the moment the decision is made to enter graduate school. In this chapter, we provide useful information that will help you to strategically prepare for the job of your dreams. Based on our experience as job seekers and as members of many search committees, we offer tips on living life as a job candidate, when and where to search for positions, what items to include in your application materials, how to prepare for the interview process, and suggested ways to distinguish yourself during the job search.
