ABSTRACT

Teaching the world is, in our opinion, the most fascinating and mind-expanding challenge in social studies instruction, providing almost limitless opportunity to explore unfamiliar faces and events, as well as test provocative ways of thinking about the past, present, and future. Yes, it is a bit frightening, but with proper humility we can all approach the world’s history as a voyage of adventure and discovery. ink of yourself as an explorer of olden times traveling into uncharted (at least for us) territories where we get to meet a lot of new folks. If we want to heighten the adventure, we can try meeting the new folks on their own terms rather than ours alone, meaning looking at the world

from others’ viewpoints, standing in their shoes (if they have any!) and immersing ourselves in their cultures.
