ABSTRACT
What are the phenomena of speaking? Beach’s essay argues that we must base a science of speech in descriptions of message phenomena that occur in naturally occurring interaction. Researchers must describe how speakers orient to these phenomena. Beach also argues that researchers’ coding processes include reflexive procedural dimensions as well as representational dimensions. The present remarks extend consideration of these themes.
