ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explore possible impacts new technologies of office communication might have on the structure of organizational communication. 1 Rapid progress in microelectronics has produced a variety of new technical communication channels for office use. Some of them, such as viewphone, video conferencing, integrated text, and fax services, are expected to enter the commercial arena of office communication in the distant future. Currently, other new channels are being implemented or are about to be introduced, such as telecopy services (fax, facsimile), telephone conferencing, computer conferencing, electronic messaging, and videotext. Their diffusion, however, is not yet much advanced.
