ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by emphasising the importance of being clear about the purposes of the services for which you are responsible, and of identifying their intended outcomes in ways that enable you to measure the extent to which you are achieving them. This may seem self-evident, but it is not always easy to achieve the intended outcomes in health and social care, where many services have multiple purposes, with outcomes that are difficult to define and measure.
