ABSTRACT
In an era of transformational global changes-trade, communications, migration, epidemics, global warming, and terrorism-that are affecting the lives of every person on the planet, one epic movement has largely escaped popular notice: the spread of democracy. The number of democracies in the world has nearly doubled since the mid-1980s, making democracy the most common form of government in place today.
