Elaborating the Monolingual Deficit

I was born into the manual working class of the industrial English Midlands in the aftermath of the Second World War. This time and place offered me a small historical window of social mobility, based on a now outmoded respect for education, that has allowed me to build a way of life very different from that of my parents without ever feeling that I have left the long historical tradition of working class development (Thompson, 1968) that I share with them.
