ABSTRACT

The most common cause of admission to the neonatal unit is due to respiratory problems often resulting in the need for mechanical ventilation (Greenough and Milner 2005). In this chapter, the most common respiratory disorders in the newborn will be presented, incorporating the pathophysiology of the conditions and the strategies that can be utilised in their management. Mechanical ventilation of the neonate is a complex situation and not without risk and complications. As the respiratory support now available is more varied, an overview of ventilation techniques is also included.
