ABSTRACT

Despite great advances in the understanding of the contributing mechanisms of injury to the developing brain and the many attempts at prevention, perinatal cerebral brain injury still remains a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Current data suggest that approximately 2-5 infants per 1000 live births experience a brain injury as a result of events that occur before, during or after birth. However, this may be more in developing countries although no strong data exist (Bhutta et al. 2005).
